RE: 45-70 velocity?
Jim,

My 45-70 Sporter #1 is made by Shiloh and has a 1:18" twist 30" heavy barrel. I'm currently working up a gg load using Swiss 1.5, 63 grains looks very promising. In fact, the last lot of Swiss 1.5 showed 63 grains to be the cat's meow in this caliber. I cast a .459" dia. 529 grain PJ Postell at 16:1. The nose of the bullet is .449" dia. Use DGL as lube and wipe between shots. I use a .060" John Walters' vegi-fiber over-the-powder wad and a .004" under-the-bullet wad, both stuffed into the case after powder compression. I never chronographed this load but I'm guessing it was somewhere near 1,200 fps. I use Federal 150 Match LP primers with a .004" thick under the primer wad. My bullet has .002" neck tension in FL-sized Remingtom brass cases. Regarding accuracy I have a number of targets with all shots through the same hole at 100 yards. I have yet to try this load at 600 yards, but have been told by an experienced shooter that this volume/weight of Swiss 1.5 will do well at that range.

Regards,
Robert
