RE: rifle detonation again
The only single shots I use smokeless in are my schuetzen guns. Charlie Dell, a noted schuetzen shooter, spent a lot of time studying chamber ringing and how to prevent it. He put more effort into this than anyone else I'm aware of. His book is definitely worth reading for any cast bullet shooter. His #1 recommendation is not to put a wad down on the powder.
I don't use wads with smokeless, but if I did, I would go with what some schuetzen shooters do and seat it with an airgap above the powder using a tool to ensure consistent wad placement. This prevents ringing and still eliminates problems with powder position sensitivity and crappy velocity SD's. But I still like no wads :-)
