this is possibly not far from the truth.
which is a pity when you discover that it was so common that it was not considered worth carrying on about in the day.
it was just taken for granted that if you wanted real accuracy, you breech seated. long range and scheutzen.
even 10 year olds would have been able to do it.
given that paper patching makes brains hurt, and breech seating makes brains hurt as well, the two combined must come as an annurism to some people.
the other issue is the urban myth of the airgap. someone said it "so it must be true".
the proof is however in the eating, and too few are prepared to swim against the tide of apathy.
