RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Back to the subject,
Who makes the actions for the slug guns today? Barrels?
I know they are a very small part of the shooting game today so what does a guy do if he wants to build one?
They shoot here every year at the NMLRA Nationals (Kenny and Jimbo shot last year) but the ranks have gone down.
When I got interested there were 8-10 guys competing and now maybe 3-4 tops.
I've never owned a muzzle loader in my life but if I was to change that it would be a slug gun!

Steve you could probably machine your own if you could get ahold of a drawing for the Hopkins and Allen under hammer.

Steve,

It looks like it would be easy for someone like you to build, but there seems to be a lot of extra nick knacks you have to have to complete the package.

Jimbo and Kenny had me interested last year and Garbe had one or two he was willing to let go. The problem around here is the lack of interest, so it would be a solo sport and I already have one of them.Big GrinTongue...............Jim

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Steve, the barrels are the problem. There are a couple of guys producing castings for the actions. Web Terry ( now deceased), Ken Bresien , and Jim Goodoin made most of the barrels now being shot at Friendship, but none are now producing barrels.
The spring shoot is now going on here in Friendship and we have 19 shooters on the line with 3 or 4 more who will move up from the round ball line later in the week.
I've been shooting sluguns for 10 years now and we have a ball.

Thanks for the welcome, Don. Thank you also for starting a slug gun forum/thread. As Kidwell mentioned, a lack of interest, makes these rifles expensive to own and expensive to get to the matches, when/if you can find one. Having said that there will be a slug gun match at Mike Otterberg's Summer heat match in Glasgow MT this August. I plan to be there with my Seth Millard .56 slug gun. The only way we can create interest for this type rifle and competition is to get the word out.

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Jim,
Thanks for the info, didn't know you were a slug gun shooter!
I'll have to talk to Ron Smith in Canada about barrels.
Don't know if you saw the schutzen barrel he made out of rebar.
The owner of the rifle shot an "all in" 250 at the Raton Nationals with it.
My point is that if Ron can make a rebar barrel he should be able to make a slug gun barrel.
It shouldn't be a problem getting the blank material but getting some to bore and rifle it is the problem.

Kidwell,
My reply was to Jim Lemon who is a friend of mine! Tongue

Don,
You may be correct about the military rifles. They are sure easy to load ammo for and they are fun to shoot but they will never replace BPCR for me.
After saying this Chip Mate, Bob Delatorre and I are driving all the way to Butte to shoot Mike Venturino's Vintage Sniper Challenge match which is a week after Butch's State BPCR Championship.
I feel guilty not going to the BPCR match but the three of us can only go on the weekend of the V/Sniper match.
