Jim thanks for the encouragement.

Brian, that sounds like good news to me, more than impressive is very good.

May just be coincidence. But for all my groove dia patched bullets, ive been using a .030 veg wad under a .030 ldpe.
Recently i used a single .060 ldpe in both my patched to groove and DD loads ( mainly just to use them up) , but seeing how well they shot, i may actually have to test them against the other.

Brian,

I my .40-65, .44-77 and .45-70s nothing else is as consistently accurate as the .060 LDPE wad.

The most forgiving rifle I have as far as wads, powder, bullet weight and primers is my C. Sharps 1874 .50-70. That rifle don't care much about all that stuff as long as the bullet is patched to groove diameter. From 475 grain up to 650 grain it just doesn't care. The heavier ones do kick pretty good and I favor the lighter ones for most shooting.

On dual diameter bullets, I finally got to try my 50 x 2 1/2" Shiloh with a dual diameter mould that I had Tom at Accurate make up for me. Catalogue ref. # 50-655D, its actually casting at close to 635 grns in 16/1. Patched with S/C 55, yellow or white, it certainly delivered the goods at our last gong match. The match we call our 'mini Quigley' with similar targets and distances. We can't duplicate the Forsyth winds though but its still fun to shoot. My Starline brass varies a fair bit in length and it may well be time to look at annealing as I ended up with about three paper rings over the course of nearly 70 rounds. The bullets themselves performed very well as long as I refrained from 'jumping' on the trigger. No leading, respectable grouping etc. I did find there was a lot of carbon/fouling buildup ahead for about 4" or so forward of the chamber at the end of each detail. I had been running two damp and one dry and think perhaps the 50 ..with igniting 115 grns of Swiss 1.5, may need a third damp...or even a 'more damp' patch to do the job. Came up spotless with two moist wipes though. The 50's can be amazingly impressive and rewarding to shoot but they do require some serious concentration . Now...do I take it to my next shoot...or revisit the 44. Tough decisions.

I know that this is an old thread, but does anyone have a copy of the .40 cal bullet that Jim Kluskens had drawn up in post #6?

Cheers,
Steve

Just as a update to this old thread, the bullet Jim made for me shot waaaaay better than I ever could. My best was 145-5x@ 1000yd. Im going to try it out in my Browning 45-70 as it has a custom badger that is full octagon and was chambered with a longer (than factory) free-bore.

If your your rifle has more than .100 free-bore, It would be a great candidate for the DD versions. Now to date Ive have 5 DD molds designed by Arnie and ALL of them shoot well!

Have the Lodi forms been sent out yet?

I just ordered a case of 2F Swiss this morning for the .38-50 and .40-65 I will use mostly this season and loading some .45-70 rounds. I havent shot this caliber for many years. I might use it or the .38-50 at Lodi to see if I get some on paper using these rifles. Big Grin
Doc still don't want me shooting anything larger than the .22 RF yet so load testing will be on hold.
Arnie I cant use the excuse that I cant see the cross hairs on black any more Big Grin I can even see with the irons now. Man it will be good to get these scops off the rifle again.

I just re read these posts. Sure miss Jim not posting on here. He was always straight forward and willing to help.
