RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Happy New Year especially since I found this Forum, somewhere to learn about Slug Guns and such. Short story, about ten years ago I purchased a Slug Gun from a gentleman that felt his eyes were getting to poor to shoot the SG. I purchased it thinking when I retire I will learn to shoot it. I did run into a few SG shooters that told me that I would need 6/8 years to learn anything about this game. Retirement never came and the SG sat all alone waiting. A few weeks ago I received a call from the wife of the Gentleman that I purchased the SG from telling me that her husband developed dementia and could not function any longer. Before reaching this point told her to offer any of his guns to his son and his brother if any left to sell call me. I now not only have a SG setting I have a 50 lb round ball gun and 14 lb round ball gun. I will look forward to reading all I can here and perhaps by the time some better weather comes to CT i will at least have some idea where to start.

SG 45 Cal 58 lbs action Bresien Bbl Goodoien FM Cross Patch

50 lb RB 50 Cal Action underhamer? Bbl Bresien FM

14 lb RB 50 Cal Action P.Quaglino Bbl ? FM

All guns had tools with them, however could not find his note book with load info would have been nice if I could.

When I learn how to I will post photos, I would love to know more about my rifles. I am familiar with Bresien & Goodoien names, however no idea about P. Quaglino

More later, thanks for reading.

Mike PIfer/Ct

PS Looking through member list the only name I know is Kenny W, I may know others but not by their list name. Hello Kenny, it has been far to long.

I dont understand why loading becomes harder when you are cleaning between shots. When the bullets are all the same size and hardness, and you are wiping the same way each time, they should load the same for each bullet. Maybe you're not getting the barrel clean enough?

As your barrel heats up it expands and the bore gets smaller.

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
You have acquired some fine rifles. They don't come any better than Ken Bresien. You are very fortunate to have the tools as well. Does the slugun have a Stainless steel barrel? I assume you got the mould and swedge. Is the bullet one piece or two piece. If two piece cast a pure lead base and the nose 4 x 1 wheel weight and soft lead. Reynolds freezer paper work well for the cross patch. I believe you said it was a 45, so start out with 89 grains of 2ff. Bullet fit is of the utmost importance, but if the gentleman you acquired it from had been shooting it hopefully that has been worked out. By the way, P. Quagliano is Phil Quagliano. A shooter of some note. Jim

Jim, yes the barrel is SS. I received two moulds, a two piece and a one piece. I have the swedge, but darn if I can figure out how it works. One of the boxes holding some of the two piece bullets were marked 88 gr FF, your right on there. Don't know how to post photos, however my rifle looks a lot like yours. Thanks for reply and information. Mike

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Greetings! Today I used the two piece 45 Cal mould and cast up some bullets. For the life of me I can not figure how to use the Hammer Swadge that came with the Rifle. Having never seen a HS before I don't know if what I have is normal, however I will try to explain what it looks like and see if any one can offer guidance. There a 4 pieces to it one piece is a round bar approx 3" dia x 5" high it looks like it two pieces fit together, has a set screw and about a 1/2" hole x 21/2" in the center from one end.

piece #2 same dis as #1 except 2 1/2 high center hole dis same at #1 at bottom of hole a cavity that looks like it would accept the nose of the bullet but not snug.

Item #3 a SS round bar with several steps to it, one end fits snugly in the center hole of both #1 & #2 Not at same time

Item #4 same as above except smaller Dia.

At some point I will find how to attach photos to post, I have photos but they are way to large, hopefully my description makes not sense .

Thanks,
Mike Pifer

Correction on my post re: my Hammer Swedge, I was going from memory and you know what that gets you. My set is 3 piece the # 1 piece that I said was 3" x 5" is way off, it really is a 1" piece of SS with a hole in the center, it does fit in to the hole on the 3 1/2" item. I hope I don't screw anything up, however I'm going to try to attach a photo to this message.

Thanks,
Mike Pifer

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Mike, the rod with the steps in it is used to drive the bullet into the swedge. Be cAreful you don't booger the edge on the rod or any of the edges in the swedge. Set the swedge on something very stable and very dead like a three foot long piece of 4x6 or a telephone pole. Use a 3 pound hamer.
Oil the bullet lightly with very thin oil, like sperm oil, and drop the bullet nose first in the swedge. Inser the rod and tap it lightly with the hammer until the bullet is seated in the swedge. Them hit the pin three good raps with the hammer. The swedge should have a floating pin it it which is how you dislodge the bullet from the swedge. You tap the pin on your rest and it should easily dislodge the bullet. I cast a round 10 piece of scrap lead to sit the swedge on. Drill a hole in it to accept the pin on the swedge and set it on the 3 foot post. I'll take a picture of my set up and it will be easy to see how it it all goes. Be carefully with the sledging rod or you be making another one. The edges on it have to be sharp or the base of the bullet will not be formed properly. Jim

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Jim, for the past couple of weeks I could not log into the sight, I must have received over a dozen new pass words. I could get into the site and read the messages being posted, however I could not respond. Don has worked with me and finally I'm back on Board!!

Thank you for the info on the Hammer Swedge, it works just like you explained. My next question is once i lay the cross strips of paper on the FM and place the large washer over them what is the best way to trim them to the edge. There a two straight razors in the kit, they are sharp and I tried using them, but that does not work very well, the cutting action pulls the paper from under the washer. I used scissors and they leave slight over hang of the strips. In reading all the past posts it seems I need to change the paper my friend used, it is old butter wrapper soaked in graphite.

Thanks again for your help,
Mike
