RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Sounds like the bullet is too small. The paper should grab the soft bullet and slide on the bore. Cross patches should just butt up like a chase patch.
Dont know who makes molds for two piece bullets. My molds came with the rifle.

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Hi Joe
I think the problem is that with the oiled patches their is not enough grip on the folded piece under the bullet with the chase patch.
I might give a cross patch a try. Are your cross patches one piece or 2 strips? Initially i thought of making an adaptor for the false muzzle with the cuts for the cross patch in the adaptor.
What calibre do you shot? I would like to try some other bullets, but do not know which way to go. one of the guys in our club is going to Friendship this year, I've asked him to see if he can get me some samples of bullets and patching for a 450 cal.
If you let me know what your e-mail addrerss is I'll post some photos to you.
Cheers Vlad

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Three rifles with paper strips. Seth Millard .56 slug gun and a 10mm German percussion schuetzen rifle and a .40 Meunier PSR. Have tried chase patches with others. Slowly going to grease groove bullets because they shoot better and easier to load and a lot less work to prepare.
Two paper strips is what I use. Paper strips can be a pain if you're in a hurry or in heavy wind.
My chase patches stay on the bullet all the way down even without being folded over at the base. It should fit tight enough to imprint the paper to the soft bullet metal. When you have the correct fit you dont need any extra paper at the base of the bullet. Must be some real slippery whale oil.
Yep, you need to make a cap for the false muzzle with two cross cuts to fit the strips. That assures proper alignment. Dont need it to make a paper strip cap first. Be careful and lay the strips on the muzzle to load. If it wont shoot with a chase patch I doubt it will do any better with strips.

I don't build any caplocks or slug guns, but I do build alot of historically accurate hunting guns. Some of you guys may have seen my stuff before , others maybe not. www.fowlingguns.com enjoy the pics.

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Hi Guys
Last year 3 of us here in Adelaide South Australia bought false muzzle barrels from Rice Barrel Co. 2 in 40 cal and 1 in 45. We are going different ways. I'm shooting a tapered paper chase patched bullet. that is almost groove diameter (with the patch). Last Sunday i tried the 100% cooton tracing paper Joe sent me. This time I didn't soak the patches the day before , just put them on a felt pad soaked with whale oil. The first 10 shot group with 60 gns of Swiss 1 1/2 FG shot a 2 inch groups , only a few shots cutting each other. Although it was easy to load the bullet through the false muzzler it became progressibvely harder. The next 10 shots were fired with 62.5 gns 1 1/2 FG. The first 3 shots cut each other. Although the final group size was again about 2 inches there were 7 shot in a raggedy hole about 1 and a bit inches. The 3 remaining shots were low.
The 3 string i tried prelubing the barrel with whale oil. Althouigh loading was a lot easier i gave up after 5 shots as the group was over 3 inches.
Any suggestions.
Cheers Vlad

Hello Vlad, nice to read you once again!
Think you said you must load dirty? No wiping between shots? How far are you shooting? The groups are better with the tracing paper?
Joe.

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Hi Joe
I clean between shots 1 wet patch soaked with Ballistol and water both sides and then 1 dry patch both sides.
Last Saturday one of our clubs members who had been to Friendship brought me back some 40 call 2 part bullets they were similar in style to mine but smaller diameter 0.3976 as mine are 0.402 at the base. As i don't know what the groove diameter of the barrel they are used in I can't say wheter my bullet may be a bit large.
i'll keep in touch with my progress.
Cheers Vlad

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
I dont understand why loading becomes harder when you are cleaning between shots. When the bullets are all the same size and hardness, and you are wiping the same way each time, they should load the same for each bullet. Maybe you're not getting the barrel clean enough?
Joe.
