RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
Tried some patches and bullet through the false muzzle loaded quite well. But did notice that rifling on one side of the bullet was lonmger thasn the other indicating the bullet is not loading straight. The false muzzle has quite a wide lead measuring 0.416 at the muzzle, and with a tapered bullet would be easy to tilt when loading. I do not have access to another mould to try a different shaped bullet.
Do you shoot a parallel sided bullet?

Cheers Vlad

Yes, parallel sided, No taper at all.

hi Joe
Is your bullet plus patch thickness close to groove diameter? My groove diameter is 0.408 and my bullet plus patch measure 0.406.

I get my bullet moulds from the US, recently from Steve Brooks. Its easy for BPCR and for schuetzen shooting but very difficult to know what to get for a muzzle loader, shape, dimensions etc.

Dont know for sure. Never measured it. Have to start the bullet with a rubber mallet so do know its larger than bore diameter.
Not sure if there's one system that works for all rifles.

hi Joe
I'm toying with the idea of having a bullet similar to the Pope style bullet he used in his false muzzle breechloaders, a parallel base band then tapered , ut for a paper patch.

How do you lube your patches?

RE: Slug Guns and Muzzleloaders
A pope bullet is a grease groove type. Mine are tapered from the base to the ogive. No straight sided base band.

I thought you said you "are using a tapered bullet now".

Would try an untapered bullet first with paper.

I lay my dry patches in a tin, a big pile, then pour a little oil in and let them soak it up. They don't get dripping wet.

Post a picture of the bullet you're using now. And one with the patch on after it goes through the false muzzle. From a clean bore, a straight paper patch bullet should shoot very accurate.
I don't have any experience with tapered paper patch bullets.
Got that cash today, Vlad. Thanks.

Thanks for that Joe. If i remember i will take some photos of my bullet , patch after running it through the false muzzle and my slug gun.

Do you swage your bullets or shoot them as cast. I've been thinking of getting the next mould to cast the correct size without swaging, as trimming the base to remove the fins from swaging, checking the lenght and then weighing the bullets is extremely time consuming. My BPCR shoot extremely well, usually an inch or better at 100 bench rest with only aperture sights.

I'm using two piece bullets. The nose is 20-1, the base is pure lead, so, have to be swaged.

Hi Joe
Went to the range on Sunday with the slug gun, ideal weather for shooting, shot my normal load and then shot 10 shots with the paperpatches you sent me lubed with whale oil. Had a problem that the bullet was slipping through the chase patches. Both groups weresimilar in size. Would like to try cross patches. . When You use cross patches do the patches overlapp eachj other or just meet.
Where do you get your 2 piece bullet moulds from?

took some photos, will try and get them to you shortly.
Cheers Vlad
