Look what I found
It took just about 6 months but they look good.
Got the finishing reamer and the sizing die reamer plus two die blanks. I have a little problem with the pilot fitting the die blanks. As near as I can measure they are .0003" larger than the die bore diameter. I will dig in my parts box, I might have a pilot if not I will have them grind one that fits.
Now to do some serious barrel finding. I'm having a little problem finding a air gauged SST 1/16 ROT barrel.
To get this job done I might just screw off the .40-65 barrel off the Browning and have it re bored to a .438/446. It might be best to make sure I like the original flat Ballard lead will shoot.

Yes I do agree they are quite nice looking. BUT now for the dumb sounding question. They are for the 44-???
Next question, how will you judge the depth to ream the dies? Will you run them in till the rim diameter of the cutter just kisses the bottom of the die and then face off the thickness of the shell holder lips?

Those reamers are for my new project. The reamer is for a .44-75 Ballard Chamber. I have an order in for a CPA Rifle.
I hoped to have the rifle done for the shooting season but it took almost six months to get the reamers and CPA is waiting for me to find a barrel.
For the Dies.
The reamer will get run in minus the depth of the shell holder.

Ok, thanks. That just sucks that things can not be acquired faster. Wish I could help you out on a barrel but I just can't. It does sound like it will be an interesting project and the CPA is a nice action to work with. I am hoping to make it up later this month to visit with Paul and Gail and see about a little problem I have with mine.

I talked to Gail several times on the phone. She is a very pleasant gal to talk to and she can answer what ever you ask.
One of my concerns with the CPA is the interchangeable barrel working loose because I had takedown lever rifles working loose. She said we can fit the barrel like any action if you don't want that option of switching barrels. But I like that option of switching barrels so I can use a .22 rim fire for the .22 matches.

I think that the ability to swap barrels is a nice and attractive feature. Many wrap the threads with Teflon tape to help reduce wear that would cause the barrels to become loose over time. The ability to have a center fire and a rim fire on the same frame and stock I feel has a great advantage. Same feel, stock and trigger has got to be a plus.
I have a barrel here that is to be turned into a 44-77 and feel that is the correct thing to do with the rolling block I have but still have thoughts that the CPA would maybe be the better option. I guess once I locate a reamer with the 5deg lead and have the cash to go to the smith. I will make the final decision.

Sam I don't have a .44-77 reamer. Yes the cost is getting pretty high having custom reamers made for the old obsolete chambers. The thing is when you go with one of the obsolete cartridges you are just fooling yourself if you don't have the proper reamer made for a resizing and case forming die. There is nothing better than having a die made that matches the chamber.
MY .44-77 has the standard Shiloh chamber but I did borrow a throating reamer and got rid of the 45 wall. The rifle was a good shooter the way it came but I got tired of the lead and paper rings and lead fouled bore.
It is now an excellent shooter using a PP or GG bullet.
