.44's at the mile.
Any thoughts on how well a 1-19 Shiloh bull barrel with a .44 2 5/8" chamber & PP bullets would hold up?
After reading of Mr. Wasserburger & friends shooting a 1 mile target,I got to thinking(usually a BAD thing).

A 50 2 1/2 with a 720 gr. PP bullet ahead of 120 grs. KIK 2F will work better!! Big Grin

Randy E used 700+ gr gg 's in his 50 2.5 at the mile successfully, mostly 45's 110,100,90 and a 70. No 40's or 44's there.High BC bullets and a XLR staff length sight. Far as I know I had the flattest load there with 318 MOA on for elev. others ran from 336 to 380 pts. You asked. bobw

I think that the bullet Bob is shooting in a 44 would do just fine with 100 gns behind it , I cast it at 480 to 500 gn and it holds quite well to 1200 in a 77 . it is only 10 tho smaller than the 45..

Dean I was using Old Faithfull the 45 .440" TGBS and vellum paper no one else likes with 101.5 grs FFg KIK to damn good execution. bobw

I shoot the .44/2-5/8 BN. I have no doubt in my mind that it would shoot quite well at to the mile. But with the 1/19 ROT you must be very selective on your bullet design. You have to get that long sleek long sharp nosed bullet out of your mind because it will lose stability when it drops into subsonic. I have shot many thousands of rounds with all sorts of powder loads trying to make the KAL 507gr elliptical and the Brent Danielson design in a 478 gr .44 prolate bullets to reach the 1K with reasonable results and I have never found a load that would put more than 4-5 out of ten on the 1K.

This original bullet design that Sharps and several others used would do very good I think at the mile in the .44-2-5/8 bn. I have never used this round at a mile but have spent three days sending this 500 bn bullet down range at 1235?yds with consecutive hits on it at Raton.
Choose the proper bullet for that 1/19 ROT and it will do just fine.
I just got a used KAL tapered gibs for the .44 with the thought of using it for a hunting bullet so I can load dirty with a bullet patched close to bore diameter and I will work with this and see if it will hold up.

I'm thinking that with the 434470 bullet from the BACO mould, and a good velocity (my 44-77 heaves that bullet at 1310 with Olde Eynsford 2f) there should be no real problem with reaching the mile target. Probably could about get there with an MVA long range buffalo soule. I only need about 160 points to reach 1000 yds, and this past weekend with the heat I was down around 140 pts shooting the 1000.

Well at the MT 1000 I was at 154pts same load at the mile was at 318pts. Kenny said a guy needed 175 to 225 over your 1000 yd sight setting to do it. Kenny's oufit and money bullet ppb did it with 336-340pts, don't remember what Brian Y's money greasers did it in but it does take an extender or an XLR staff to do it. bobw
