45 2 7/8 Groove Dia Patched - Semtav - 07-30-2013

thanks for the new forum category Don ( and BobW)

I just got my 45 2 7/8 back with its new barrel. Hopefully this time it will be the proper dimensions.

My goal is to use it for my Paper Patching test bed. I acquired a .454 dia mould and plan on trying my hand at Groove dia patching.
I know most of you patch to bore, but hopefully someone will come along with experience patching to groove to help out.

Bryran you are going to need some thin paper ask Don about the 8# Seth Cole. The other day or week ago I read that someone was talking about a new tracing paper at Wallyworld so I checked it out and bought a tablet of it, about $3 for 40 9x12 sheets.I cut a strip and a patch a couple of minutes ago and wrapped one of my .4415" slicks to just a little short of .448 so about .006" dry. Patched damp and dried that might get you to .459-.460". How did they chamber it? bobw

Brian,

What is your rifle and throat? plus the bullet profile? nothing wrong patching to groove using the 110.
When I had the Pedersoli 120 I patched it to groove but that rifle had a long .400" cylinder freebore were patching to groove was the best way to get good accuracy with this type of throat. The 2-7/8 case of the 110 has plenty of powder capacity to deep seat your bullet if it needs to be if it has the now normal chamber with no free bore or maybe .050".
Let me know your progress with it.

Kurt

John Taylor chambered it. He sent me a drawing of the chamber but it was too small to read and I can't blow it up. I'll have to make a chamber cast when I get home but I think it is a standard chamber.
Chamber seemed pretty tight for the new Norma brass I had when I tried to chamber one the other night while home. Had to run one thru a full length sizing die to get it to chamber, so it might be too tight for groove dia patching. Won't know til I do some checking.

The Norma brass should work pretty good. The brass runs about .010"-.012" but that .454 diameter bullet is a little large even for patching to groove diameter.
I used a .450 diameter and patched it using the .0022" thick paper from Paper Mill. With that combination it shot lights out, but the Pedersoli had a large chamber.

IIRC Montana Charlie on the Shiloh forums shoots pp bullets patched to groove, and does well with them. He also seems to be very helpful to shooters looking for info on pp loads patched to groove. FWIW.

the link don posted should also have a tan paper in the same configuration it is 7# , or at least the stuff I have is, it is thinner than dress pattern paper,

RE: 45 2 7/8 Groove Dia Patched - bobw - 07-31-2013

That's right Steve he does and I think he is also using a .454 mold IIRC. At one time I had a Tom Ballard cut on Lyman blocks C Sharps mold that was adj at .448" dia.. I did sell that to a guy in California so he could get his 45-90 Shiloh/C Sharps Farmer up and running. I sent him some bullets to try first and he was able to make them shoot minimal effort( gun had the famous freebore problems). Where there is a will there is usually a way to get'r done. It took a lot of years to get on the right track of successful patching with my 50-3 1/4" because of the bs advice I got and the 3/8" freebore in it. I did persevere and achieve good results but you know it just isn't an everyday shooter either. It is my hope guys can gain solid knowledge from things others have done that worked and didn't work so they can atleast start out in the right direction to success right here on this site, in this forum. Constructive input of successes and objective input from what didn't work sometimes is just as valuable to one starting out. bobw

Dean how did it work? , guess I allways worry to much about being to thin. bobw
