Fireforming Norma Brass for paper patch loads - Opencountry - 05-14-2012

Hello gentlemen...and ladies, if there are any,

I just fireformed some Norma brass intended for pp shooting. Before stuffing the cases with my usual pp load I FL-sized the cases and trimmed them to 2.885" for my 45 2 7/8" chambered Shiloh. I use a Meacham neck sizing die to size about .10" at the end of the mouth of the case to seat the patched bullet. When stuffing the wads on top of the compressed powder column they fit the FL-sized case tightly, so tightly they actually buckled. This left my loaded round OAL's inconsistant with one another. I usually size just the mouth of the case after the cases are fireformed, the wads sitting atop the compressed powder column nice and flat. Well, I wasn't expecting very good results, just wanted to fireform the new Norma cases. I was surprised at the results. Here are two 200-yard targets. The one at the top is using a rear bag for support, and the target at the bottom I'm using just my shoulder for support. After firing the cases they measured 2.880" in length, just what I was shooting for.

Edit: BTW, the chamber measures 2.878".

No, the kids had me and their mother corralled all day long. But we ate like kings and queens, and grammy got lots of flowers and kisses from the grandkids. I went through withdrawals not being able to bust a cap all day, but I made up for it when I got up at 2:00 AM this morning to load for this fireforming shoot.Big Grin

What is the fired outside diameter of your case mouth? bobw

Robert, that is a good start.
I think the Norma brass is the best for a PP load. I also like the beveled rim that lets you cam a round in if the fouling gets to b a problem.

Thanks Kurt,

The fireformed Norma brass shoots very well with my 111 grain Goex Fg load. Not to brag on myself, not my intent, but on good days all shots are in the X-ring. I brag on the rifle, truly! It's a 16 1/2-pounder (Shiloh). It shoots the swaged 100% pure lead bullets from Buffalo Arms just as well as the pp 'money' mould I bought from them.

Edit: And, I might add, the better the patches go on to the bullets the tighter groups I achieve. If I can keep the wraps straight, and cut to the correct length the rifle will really perform well.
