.38-50 #2 - Kurt - 10-15-2024

It's been quiet on these pages so I will make some noise Big Grin

I junked the barrel of the new problem child CPA .38-50 that just did not want to make me happy so I ordered a GM .375 honed and air gauged barrel and got it mounted.

I formed new brass for it with a different head stamp because this chamber I had Manson make another reamer that is different than what the .38-50 Hepburn has so I don't have to worry about getting the brass mixed.
Well After getting the .30-40 Krag necks blown out and and fired the second time and trimming it long for the third firing so they dont come out too short when they match the chamber with the third forming proses.
I set up the target at 200 and shot. When I went down to get the target and seen a shotgun pattern on the paper I wish I would have left the other barrel on Big Grin The loads were just old powders 1.5, 2 and 3F mixed and odd and end left over bullets not using my good OE and Swiss powder and match primers for the forming stage.
Well I cleaned the brass, resized the cases and annealed them again and got out the good primers and powder and loaded some that worked good in the Hepburn and shot two groups again and they put a smile on my face when I saw them. I think this rifle will now shoot I hope as well as the Hep does.
I sure like these little .38-50's

I keep thinking I'm going to get the 38-55 Ballard out and stretch it's leg a little but never seem to get around to it.

RE: .38-50 #2 - Kurt - 10-15-2024

I don't have a .38-55 but I have shot them but the loads were with jacketed bullets. My friend had a Mod. 64 Win in one and I will say that it was a tack driver.
I passed up a .38-55 Lever Marlin I regretted not taking it home.

Sorry.

Kurt, did you look at the bore of the GM barrel? I am curious about the finish they are doing now.

Cheers,
Steve

TNX. Don,

RE: .38-50 #2 - Kurt - 10-16-2024

Steve,

Yes I ran a bore scope down it before I did anything and it was as smooth as glass with good sharp edges but dark like the cooling fluid, maybe water base darkened it, sort of a gray/brown color. I cant seem to post a photo on the PM here for some reason.
I just finished forming 200 cases with PP and the bore is starting to get shiny but still some spots.
I loaded some ladder loads yesterday and if I get a chance in a day or so I will see how things work out. I do have a good feeling with the 10 rounds I fired.
