Comparisons - Don McDowell - 12-20-2012

Was doing some reading last night and I got to wondering. When we look back at the great shooters of the early Creedmoor days, while their accomplishments were large, how would they really stack up today?
The difference in equipment they were allowed to use by rule is vastly different from what we use now. The sights have changed greatly.
So is it possible that todays perennial top contenders ( Gullo, Wasserburger,Youngberg, Terry ,Ahmer, Rix , etal) are the same caliber of riflemen or maybe even better than the men we look back on ?
But even what makes me wonder more, is will there be future generations to look back on the accomplishment todays riflemen achieve?

sure they will Don, at the same time a select few will want to be even better and will raise the standard even more, this is the norm in all sports

RE: Comparisons - Dave Roelle - 12-20-2012

Hi Don:-----------i haven't the historical knowlege of many here, but it seems the basics of the rifle and sights are pretty much the same-------------is the course of fire or ranges or target configurations vastly different ?

Concerning "riflemen"-----at one time i considered myself a pretty fair rifleman--------till i picked up my Sharps and began understanding what the "Real Riflemen" can accomplish at ranges that seem impossibly LONG--------Will todays Riflemen be remembered and their accomplishments really understood----------only by those historians who care !!

Have a great Christmas

Dave

Dave the course of fire has changed. Today there's unlimited sighters at most matches. Back then you could have 2 sighters if you paid for them in advance. Today you can use crossticks, back then no artificial rests unless you were a one armed man , and then your prosthesis did not count against you.
Sights were bit different as the soule sight wasn't quite here yet, and windage was on the front sight.
I also think the rifles we have today are probably a good bit better in final fit and finish than that of the time.

Gotcha Don----------------it woiuld be interesting to recreate the old match and actually shoot it-----------you would have a much better perspective .

By the way--------------i think theres a hole in the snowfence up that way--------------its COLD down thisa way

Dave I'ld love to shoot a match with everybody shooting the old rules. I think it would be a hoot, and a real learning experience for most entrants.
The wind blew the snow fence down so bad here we can't even get the snow... just the cold and the wind, you can thank Shadow4 and Knobs mt for that....

HuhI, for the life of me can't understand how I come out getting blamed for some stuffDodgy Ya know Don the wind around here has been spending quite a bit of time coming from the south latelyTongue

The snow fence is DOWN OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when this Drago mess finally blows out i'll see can i get the boy's in south Texas to open a gate or two--------------the proliferation of "bump gates" down that way could be blamed for stoppage of the southerly breezes
