Head scratcher - Don McDowell - 12-10-2018 Got a halfway decent break in the weather, so out for some ammo testing in the CSA lowall, with the McGowen fast twist heavy barrel. None of the federal stuff would shoot more than mediocre at 200 meters. Aquila rifle match was mediocre plus.. Now for the head scratcher part. At 200 meters Lapua Center x shoots real nice groups on paper, but on the ram swinger WW Super X T22 shoots a five shot group about the size of a 50 cent piece ... Got to ponder this one a bit... Last week shooting indoors at 25 yards, it really showed an almost hatred for the Norma match but would shoot bug hole groups with the T 22.. RE: Head scratcher - Gussy - 12-10-2018 What's the twist rate?? Just put a 20 inch, 16 twist on my 10-22. Gus RE: Head scratcher - Don McDowell - 12-10-2018 This one is a 28 in 14 twist. Another interesting thing I'm seeing with this is how sensitive to sight adjustment it is. 2 minutes goes along ways on this rifle. RE: Head scratcher - Gussy - 12-10-2018 I was told that 24 inches is the max barrel length for a .22. Beyond that you lose velocity. Might be why STD doesn't work and high velocity does. Chrono them? RE: Head scratcher - Kurt - 12-10-2018 Gussy I read a report I don't remember where it was written but they took a barrel and chopped it off 1" at a time and fired several rounds to get an average and the velocity was optimum at 16" RE: Head scratcher - Gussy - 12-10-2018 What's it doing out of 28 inches? RE: Head scratcher - Don McDowell - 12-10-2018 I don't know how much velocity would be lost between 24 and 28 inches, but I believe the accuracy potential goes up with the longer barrel using irons. Scope it probably matters little. What I think makes this particular rifle so ammo sensitive is the 14 twist. RE: Head scratcher - Don McDowell - 12-10-2018 Thinking just for kicks and grins next time I order from one of the mail order houses, might see if they have any of the Winchester or Aquila 60 gr bullet stuff.. RE: Head scratcher - Kurt - 12-11-2018 Jim I have no idea what the velocity is out of the 28" .22. I haven't set the chronological up for several years. RE: Head scratcher - Gussy - 12-11-2018 I have 2 10-22s. One original with 16 in barrel and another with 20 in. Get some good weather and I might have to check it out. |
