Ideal 457132 - Don McDowell - 01-17-2018

Ok we need to see if anybody has one of these. Not the modern day one from Lyman, the Ideal one with the tapered base.
We have a mould maker of very high repute that would like to borrow it for just long enough to make a dead nuts copy of the cavity.
Pm myself or desert deuce

Don, I posted over on the ASSRA board asking if anyone might have one of these molds. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. You never know over there who just might have what. If I get a positive response I will pass the info along and see what happens.

If you can get more dead-nuts than this I'll buy you a beer. Well, I think the lube grooves are actually .399-.400, pending how you rotate and measure. Drawing say's .403. Base of nose can find a half thou off too as you rotate but that's as close as calipers/mic can obtain off a bullet cast out of an original. Drawing and bullet are within 3/10ths of a grain on weight.

Who is the mold maker Don? I'd be very interested.

Btw... would love to see one in 475gr as well. Not because I'm decided yet but because I'd like to see how I already did on scaling down. I got to within 95% of BC and Form Factor but would sure like to compare my effort to an original Ideal. Might pay for me to ask that question on Castboolits I suppose.

Looking at original IDEAL Postell moulds years gone by, drawing of original mould 1934 edition IDEAL handbook Page 91 the drawing you posted does not look like the original mould or 1934 era advertisement from the front driving band forward. Not saying it is not, just saying it does not look like them. Also, the drawing does not show a reduced base band. Moreover, it is not conclusive evidence.

Which is why the mould maker wants to be able to advertise it as a "True" copy of THE ORIGINAL IDEAL 457132 mould and needs the original unaltered mould to copy for that purpose.

At this point I am not sure the mould maker is amenable to having their identity disclosed, unless and UNTIL, an original unaltered mould is found. As noted others have offered their version of the ORIGINAL Postel and we are pretty sure they are nothing more than similar.

AND, I fully understand such reservations, BEFORE, investing THEIR money and time in the project.Confused

For what its worth, I do have a Postel mold that was cut by Walt at NEI. They say that it is/was as close to the original as was available. The blocks are aluminum and yes they do cast oversize on the driving bands. Just how much I can't tell you as I don't have any unsized laying around at the moment that I know of. I am willing to loan out the mold if that would help. I do remember at one time measuring around on the bullet and can tell you that the nose taper starts at the first band. A loaded round laying here on the desk measures about .448 where the nose meets the first band. There is no parallel section on the nose on this bullet.

Thanks Sam, but the original blocks are the quarry here. Fortunately we may have a line on a couple.. Still digging.
