Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Randy Bohannon - 04-13-2017 Any reason to not try them with black powder ? 45-70 or 40-70 SS, I have a 1000 of them I bought by mistake a few years ago and have never loaded anything using them. Or should I buy a magnum rifle and use them in that ? Thinking a over primer wad would cool/slow down the magnum primer fire. RE: Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Don McDowell - 04-13-2017 A lot of folks swear by them. RE: Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Randy Bohannon - 04-13-2017 With or without the over primer wad ?,I will try them. Thank you Don. RE: Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Don McDowell - 04-13-2017 Some shoot with out some shoot with. RE: Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Randy Bohannon - 04-13-2017 Will report tomorrow if the wind is down in the am. RE: Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Don McDowell - 04-13-2017 Windy bugger here to. Wanted to shoot the 44-77 a bit today get some setting on the ladder sight for the silhouette match Saturday... Guess I'll go into the match cold turkey.. RE: Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Randy Bohannon - 04-14-2017 Wind was down enough to give the Federal Gold Medal Magnum primers a go.I shot 25 rounds in the Shiloh 45-70 using a Brooks 500 gr. pointy bullet and 72 grs. of O.E. 1.5. I am beginning to really like this powder, all shots stayed in the 10 ring @100 yds.One 5 shot group was all X ring. This is the best group I have shot with this bullet, fouling was considerably less than what was usual with the same load and different primers. The north wind picked a bit and my eyes were watering so I called it quits.I am pleasantly surprised next load some 40-70 SS and see if I can improve the performance with those. RE: Federal Gold Medal Match primers/Magnum - Don McDowell - 04-14-2017 Sounds like you found a sweet spot load. |
