45-90 bpcr - Don McDowell - 01-01-2017
Shot the rebarreled Browning this morning. Oregon Barrel cut to the same contour as the original bpcr barrel. 16 twist 45 caliber. Started out with the chamber reamed with a Dan T paper patch chamber, that proved to tight to be useful. Had it opened up with Eron Ahmers 45-90 reamer. Shot a variety of mostly patched ammo that had been loaded for a year or two from load workup for the CPA.. Anywho, not to shabby for 300 yds.

Do you still use the CPA? What twist is it? They always appeared to be well made.

Jim, I still have the CPA and will likely use it for Creedmoor, unless I get more time to work up loads for this rifle that make it shine. This one was a 40-65 that I was going to make into a 44, then I got the urge to try a fast twist 45. So ordered this barrel up with a 16 twist. This barrel finished out at 32 inches long.
I think it's going to work really well, the picture don't show the clusters real good, but that mess at 1 ockock is actually about 7 impacts. Same with that one down at 7 there's 3 on top of each other, and one went thru the spike hole.

Most of them would of been 81-82 gr. 1 1/2 OE, various patched bullets and wad combo's, just a mixed up mess of old ammo.

What is the size of that plate?
That looks like it will put them on top of each other when the weather is more fit and when the load is finalized.
I sure like the 16 ROT in my CPA .45-90.
Sometime when you get a chance and make a cast of that barrel I would like to know what the bore groove is. The two barrels I got form him his man making the barrels was having a problem keeping them in tolerance. The first was ordered .438/.446 and it was delivered .438/.451/ The second replacement for the barrel I sent back it came .438/.443 and the lands where double cut like his index jumped a halve land. Very noticeable looking through the magnified bore scope.
I hope he will get his barrel maker to get things worked out. It might be tough changing from Muzzle loader barrels to cartridge barrels, I don't know but the two in a row I got makes me hesitant ordering another one. Barrels makers are few in between for the calibers we shoot. Joe and Suzi are top people to work with, but his machinist he needs to get things worked out.
Please let me know what your bore is like. I have a new .44-77 reamer getting ground for a silhouette rifle.
I called Smith up in Canada for a barrel and he does not have the tools for a .438/.446. Krieger will make a 16 on special order but he is swamped making AR barrels.

The bore is a loose .448. Don't remember what Eron said the groove was, but for most of what I want to do with it, it'll do just fine. Need to do some work with my super secret Brooks bullet, I think this thing will work great with it. It does not however like the .444 tapered gibbs from KAL, sprays them all over the place. Might try wrapping some of those in 9 lb to see if that helps any.
Plate is 23 inches wide and about 12 inches deep between the "ears".

Yes it does Don, thank you. I guess I will just place a order at Krieger and wait. This .44-77 reamer set will be designed to shoot a groove diameter PP bullet with a very gentle transition of 3° on the line of the old original chambers. This should keep the nose setback and upset to a minimum. It should almost have no deform effect the bullet.

I've got a certificate for a Kreiger barrel, but haven't decided what to do with it yet. Got another one for 100$ off of a Green Mtn, but there again, not exactly sure what to do with it. The last one of those I got a 44 barrel thinking have have this Borchardt re barreled, but then decided to have the CPA 40-65 turned into another 44-90. That Oregon barrel I put on ol Buttugly sure shoots great, so I'm thinking use it for scoped gun and the CPA for irons.

I have a certificate for GM also that might have expired by now. I want a round barrel 16 twist.
