Attention Don - Creeker - 12-02-2016

Please comment on these patches.

First two from my 50 caliber M/L, .490" round ball, 70 gr. FFG

After cleaning the barrel with water & dish soap this patch wet with No.13 bore cleaner [T/C] was used to swab the barrel. I'm not much on colors so does the patch look normal.

Looks like the barrel was rust blued and that is starting to come out. Might just for kicks soak a cleaning patch in pure gum spirits of turpentine and scrub the bore a bit.
How's the accuracy?

RE: Attention Don - Don McDowell - 12-02-2016

Also what are you using for patch lube?

RE: Attention Don - Creeker - 12-02-2016

I'm using prelude patches with a slim coating of Bore Butter added to the rifling side of the patch.

This is an older rifle I purchased for a 100 bucks. About the best I've done is 3 to 4 inches at 50 yards.

The patches I picked from the ground & don't believe they show any sign of striping or blow by? I will admit I'm not the best shot but beieve I'm better than this.

Might just for accuracy kicks, try dropping back to 50 gr.
Your patches look good, so chances are it's a matter of fooling with the powder charge to find the sweet spot. 1 gr per caliber for general shooting and 2 for knocking big mean gnarly stuff on the ground was the old standard.

Aw fresh venison on the menu at the end of that week I presume. Have a good hunt.
