No over powder wad. - Lumpy Grits - 08-28-2012 Who has tried it with GG bullets? What was the out come? THX, Gary RE: No over powder wad. - Brownie Nash - 08-29-2012 I have not tried it, but back in 1999 I shot a match with one of the top BP shooters here in the northwest that shot a 40 round match with a 50-70. His bullet was cast 40-1 and used no over powder wad. He had no leading or any other problems. Incidentally he also won the match. Go figure. I load my 44-40 without overpowderwad and find there is no disadvantage at all. 34 grs KIK fffg and a RCBS or Lyman Bullet on Top Klaus
RE: No over powder wad. - Opencountry - 09-03-2012 ...and everyone sqaucks about using a .060 vegi-fiber over-powder wad rather than a .030"! Robert RE: No over powder wad. - Lumpy Grits - 09-03-2012 I'm using wax paper for a over powder wad now ![]() Gary RE: No over powder wad. - Dave Roelle - 09-03-2012 Same here Gary----------when i first started down this path it was suggested by one of the better shooters here and i haven't seen the need for anything else !!!!!!!!!! Dave RE: No over powder wad. - drcook - 09-03-2012 Kurt has a picture of a bullet base when shot with no overpowder wad. Maybe he will post a link so you all can see what happens to a bullet that doesn't have some kind of buffer between it and the powder. RE: No over powder wad. - Kurt - 09-03-2012 Dave I just posted a picture a couple weeks ago about three threads down on Veg fiber over powder wads. I did look into this using 1FG to 4FG powder several years ago with out wads or just wax paper or news paper wads. Using 1F with out did considerable damage to the bullet base including the sharp edges doing crazy stuff to accuracy. placing a wax paper wad did not help protecting the base but a .012" poster board wad did. There were no impressions in the base using 1/40 T/L alloy. Pistol bullets using 3F were no problem also the rifle cartridges except when heavy compression was used . Alloys as hard as 1/16 with 1F and 1.5 swiss did the number on the bullet base. I might still have photo's of all the different wad and powder results in on disc. Using the hard alloy other problems came into play besides base damage. Gas cuts came into play using a PP or GG bullet. Hard bullets that were .002" over groove diameter faired pretty well. ![]() Kurt RE: No over powder wad. - drcook - 09-03-2012 Thanks, I just didn't remember where it was and it was easier to just get your attention and ask.............. A picture is worth a thousand words and in the debate of wad -vs- no wad, that picture says a whole lot about what happens under the conditions Kurt mentions. You probably wouldn't see any difference at all in a Cowboy Action Shooting match, as the ranges are pretty short, but at the long range distances (200 to 1000 yards) a bullet base like that is a real detriment. RE: No over powder wad. - .22-5-40 - 09-05-2012 Hello, everyone. Back in the early 80's, there were local BPCR shoots..fairly short range affairs..50 & 100yds..a few 200yd matches. I was using an original Winchester High-Wall in .38-55. Slight roughness ahead of chamber, but would group in 1" at 100yds..if I did my part. I tried just about every combination I could think of..but I never could get that thing to shoot using any kind of wad under the bullet. It's funny, we didn't even know about blow-tubes then. I had to clean every 3 shots to maintain accuracy. Even using smokeless, it won't tolerate a wad. Now in my .40's, I use a .030" veg. fibre wad with both black & smokeless with improved accuracy..go figure? |
