Veg. fiber overpowder wads........ - Lumpy Grits - 08-14-2012

What thickness(.030" or .060")are folks using and why?
This is for .45 cal Sharps w/GG bullets.
Thanks for your time,
Gary

Mostly .030(cuz that's what I got the most of), sometimes .060

I buy .030s because if I buy .060s, they might cause an "over compression" that may not work out to be a good recipe for the shooter. I buy .030s, I can always double up!

Have you seen any issues in gas sealing ?

How can .030" cause this?
I compress close to .400" with 3F Goex.

I use .030 as I would rather use the extra .030 for powder not filler.

Just my opinion.

I have a lot of 0.060 wads left-over from my "45/90 days". They work just fine in the 45/70 Shiloh. I compress Swiss powder about 0.250" when using a 525 gr bullet loaded to engage the rifling, and the rifle produces 6"groups + - @ 400 yards when I am able to do my best.

I know this gets boring, but I don't mess with success !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been using .060 f/wads since I started this 'game' in my .45-70. Same for the .45-90 I picked up a couple of years ago.
With my .400" powder compression, don't think .030 will make any diff. to the target. But was SWAG'n is all......

I use a lot of .012" wads cut from poster boards the pretty fluorescent kind Big Grin over the powder lube wad then a .023 milk or OJ carton wad under the bullet.
GG I use a .012 or the .023 over the powder.
But I also use multi wads in some cases but I really cant see any difference doing this so I just use the thin wads.

Thx, Kurt.
Have you had any issue with the GG lube soak'n into the thinner wad?
