40-70 ss - Don McDowell - 02-20-2016

Jamison cases, 69 hrs OE 1.5, Baco .396415M cast from 18-1, wrapped in sethcole 55w. Seems to shoot decent, just need to run a bunch more down range to be sure.

Hey Ranch, That looks great! You didn't mention lube, so was that group fired while wiping between shots? Shoot sharp, Mike

RE: 40-70 ss - Don McDowell - 02-24-2016

RE: 40-70 ss - Mike - 02-24-2016

RE: 40-70 ss - ken s - 08-17-2016

Hey Mike. I'm shooting an original 40 70 SS '74 Sporting rifle.
had the chamber re lined to correct a problem, and had it done to
40 70 SS. from 40 2/ 5/8 BN. so some very slight freebore.

gun works fine....
load 65 Swiss 1 1/2, slight or no compression with the expander die.
060 card wad, two newspaper wads under the bullet, (prevents the wad from sticking to the bullet.) 330 Brooks 1/20 cast. Mag primer.
.397, and PP to .403 bore diameter of the original. Then shell run in the factory crimp die to tighten around the PP bullet. just the top, and lightly.

just starting to work up loads....it shot a 2 inch 5 shot group at 50 yards yesterday. I'm off to the range again today. hope for the best.
I found when I rest it close to end of the barrel, it shoots much tighter groups. tight to the shoulder, tight to the end of the barrel on a sandbag.
