Got the puppy out - Gussy - 01-02-2016 Out of the gun safe came the 1885 Browning 22 Hornet. Well the gun and shell are period, sort of. Seems there's an outfit paying around $50.00 for coyotes on the hoof. Now if I don't have to mess with the critter, that is interesting. I've have used the .222 BDL Rem or AR but they are bothe h*ll on hides. I don't have any solids for either, just hollow pts and soft tips. The Hornet should do the job. Now to find some dumb coyotes and clean up the gene pool.

Enjoyed some of your wine on New Years eve, really good! Rick RE: Got the puppy out - Don McDowell - 01-02-2016 Unless you are really close, probably won't get any exits with the hornet, but if you do it won't be much different than with the bigger 22's. RE: Got the puppy out - Gussy - 01-02-2016 Rick, Just got out the buff X sticks I used there. My only targets up now are the 50 & 100 yd gongs. Dead dog, just like it was when I put it away !! I had a little wine too. I still have 12 bottles of the Syrah you liked....so do I ! Don, I've gotten some nasty holes on the backside with the bigger rifles. The exception was when I used to use Hornady SX bullets but I don't have those anymore. Most times, they never came out. They were Hornet bullets and pushed to the edge in the .222 and would blow in flight up if used in a .223. I liked them as there was no chance for a bounce, hit anything and they exploded. I just couldn't find a bulk buy on them. RE: Got the puppy out - Don McDowell - 01-02-2016 I never had much damage when shooting just 55 gr soft points in the 223.. 170 gr from the 30-30 ai, now that was a bit different. RE: Got the puppy out - Ironramrod - 01-02-2016 You might also try the Hornady 40 gr. VMax , and the equivalent 40 gr. Sierra in your .222. I've never had an exit wound w/ either in a .223 Rem (27 gr. Hblc2 powder). The only problem w/ these bullets for coyotes is they will scare you about 1/2 the time before they collapse even w/ a solid chest hit. We also found the Hornady 53 gr. match or the Sierra 52 gr. match HP were very good on coyotes, and little pelt damage w/ solid hits; they are a little overkill on the fox side of things. Additionally, the 40 gr. bullets were great on fox, if you have any in your area. Very few had an exit wound. Regards I do have a bx of the 40 grn VMax .224 and 1 1/2 bxs 35 grn in the cabinet . Never tried them. I got them in an all or nothing thing on the net when I got also 10 boxes of Sierra .223 Hornet bullets and the VMax was part of the buy. The Sierras were what I've been shooting and when a super deal on .223 bullets came up from a guy dumping his Hornet stuff, I grabbed them. Old habits, but when I get a good load worked up for a gun, that's what I stick to. Usually get a bunch of bullets of one kind if it's working well. RE: Got the puppy out - Kurt - 01-03-2016 When I was a kid I took a lot of red and gray fox using the .22 hornet and the .222 collecting $5. bounty money for the red ears and $20. for a good hide. $30. for a gray fox hide at Monkey Wards. Anything under 200 yards with those calibers the hide was useless, worse using the .22 varminter (.22-250) or the .25-06 wildcat would make a mess out of the reds at 400 yards. RE: Got the puppy out - Gussy - 01-04-2016 I shot a bobcat at 100 yds last year and totally destroyed the hide. Shot one at 200 the year before and it was OK. Both with the .222 and hollow points which is the only thing I have loaded for it. I haven't been wanting hides on coy dogs so that's all I loaded. Now... I better find something that dosen't eat the hide too. RE: Got the puppy out - Kurt - 03-20-2016 ![]()
