What Powder - Chaz - 12-29-2015 I know this has probably been asked a thousand times if once, however I am just getting back to BPCR and I am seeing these post for Old Eynsford Powder. I was using Swiss when I was shooting ten years ago ( can't believe that time slipped by) and dabbled with Schuetzen powder also. Looking I see the cost of powder has gone up quite a bit i think Swiss was $18 per pound when I bought it last. Now I see $23. So a less expensive alternative would be nice. This leads me to Schuetzen or OE. I will be feeding a 45-70 and 45-100. I would like opinion on which is a better alternative, not even sure what to get OE in 2f or what? thanks Charlie RE: What Powder - Don McDowell - 12-30-2015 Charlie, Schützen is a good powder. Another viable alternative is KIK. But Eynsford is quite possibly the best powder available today. My recommendation for a kill two birds with one stone powder would be Eysnford 1.5. If you wanted a variety, I would suggest Schuetzen 2 f for the 45-70 and KIK for the 100. Or 2f Eynsford for the 45-70 and pick one of the 1.5's for the 100. I tried some Schuetzen 1f, and my rifles did not care for it. RE: What Powder - Chaz - 12-30-2015 Don, Thanks for the info, I think I will try a couple pounds of that OE to see how it does for me, Are they using that the same with the same load techniques. Find the oal for bullet then fill with powder to that level, wad and start testing from there? Are they compressing the OE? I would think you would get well over 95 grain in that 100 case if you are compressing? I never load developed for a 45-100. I saw a post for a starting point by Montana Charlie on one of the sights that makes a lot of sense to start with. charlie RE: What Powder - Don McDowell - 12-30-2015 Eynsford starts to work good at about 1/4 inch compression and you can go up from there with what ever amount you need to find the velocity, and accuracy you need. You might be able to get 90 grs 1.5 in the 100 case. I shoot 82 grs. in the 45-90. I just want to start with some base components and work up some loads from there. Posted for a suggestion on a good bullet mold to start with in 45 cal. Charlie RE: What Powder - Lumpy Grits - 01-06-2016 I switched from Goex 3F to OE 2F. The OE 2F burns cleaner and at the same FPS as G/3F did. I'm compressing about .350" in my .45-90 loads. Gary RE: What Powder - Chaz - 01-14-2016 Gary, Thanks for the info. I think I am going to start off with the OE 2F powder. I have to start somewhere and I have no loads worked up for anything as they are all new to me. I figure on using the same brass, primers, powder, and bullets to try and keep those constant and work up something from there. Charlie RE: What Powder - Lumpy Grits - 01-14-2016 I'm run'n 84gn of 2F "E" in my .45-90 w/PJ Creedmoor bullet. I am currently putting together a 45-70 Springfield trapdoor for fun, target shooting and hopefully some long and or medium range competition. The rifle will be assembled with all original springfield parts the barrel is from 1883 or 84 same with the breech block. The barrel is very good condition real shiny lands grooves and the lands ridges are distinctive with real sharp edges. It appears to not been used much, only bad part is the muzzle is very rusty for the first 3/4" or so so I am having to shorten it maybe just to 32". I have the J.S. and Pat Wolfe book to use as a loading guide so my question to you guys is best powder to use and avalability here in Bay area north of San Francisco. I like all the reviews and results of Old E and am thinking to use just it, so would ff or fff be best. Will use the Lee .405 gov HB mold still have to get the .500 mold. Have Lee press and dies with Wolf expander plugs and powder compression plug. Should I use the same compression as shown in the book? It appears his guidelines provide the best accuracy. Jim |
