Tissue Paper - Dave Roelle - 01-05-2015

I was sneaking a peek while Becky was wrapping Christmas gifts and noticed she had a package of "tissue paper" for gift wrapping----------the stuff measures between 0.001 an 0.0012 thick, anyone ever try this paper ?

Wrapping either wet or dry seems very good-------pretty tough for being so thin.

Testing will commence on my new PP Brooks "money bullet" as soon as the weather warms up a bit.

a lot of people in the past used dress patterns with pretty good results , there was a company that made patching paper for wolf droge before he was split with C Sharps that was mighty close to tissue paper and it worked quite well but was expensive and wasteful because the sheets were small and odd sized.

Thanks for the information !!!!------------this stuff comes folded up nicely so i clamped it to the bench under the template (1/4 thick and hardened)----------a single edge razor blade made a pile if patches QUICKLY

I'm casting this afternoon and will commence patching tomorrow--------test results will follow.

I think Wolf's paper was a lens wipe paper with out the chemicals on it.
I don't use paper that is so thin that two wraps is less then groove depth.
You might look into the paper that is on the exam tables in the Doctors office. It's less then .002" thick but I don't know what sizing it has mixed in it.

Hi Kurt:

My Shiloh has rifling that measures 0.457 with a 0.450 bore so i'll be just a bit short of the groove depth, a few test shots didn't show any lead and the patch blows off in a "puff" of white at the muzzle

My current PP loads have used tracing paper that around 0.002 and while the accuracy has been fair i usually find about 3/4's of the inner wrap that doesn't get cut by the rifling--------so i have been nosing around for either a "softer" "less dense" paper or "thinner" hoping that accuracy improves with complete cutting through of the patch.

We'll see what happens as soon as a nice day shows up for some comfortable range time.

I'm familiar with the "doctors" paper your talking about---it seems pretty dense-----i'll have my hunting partner grab some from the hospital and investigate further.

This is what I get using 100% .0018 cotton paper.

and this is what I get using .0025 25% cotton paper. I see no difference I accuracy Smile

I am with Kurt here I have loads that leave a 1/2 patch and they shoot as good or better than some others made with thin patches that blow apart.

Gentlemen:

Thanks for the photo's and the insight into the patch/confetti/accuracy---------for me learning is the fun part-----ya never know when you will discover something unique.

Ill shoot loads with the new patch along with my current PP loads during the same range session we'll see what happens Smile

--- that way we have nearly the same conditions for the test.

If you change to a paper that is substantially thinner than the original paper you were shooting, the 'slick bullet' really should be slightly larger in diameter so the patched bullet is back to the original OD. I have found that a PP bullet that is a few thousands smaller than bore, is not accurate in my 45-70. But with that said; in my 40-70SS it does not seem to matter much.

Hi Mike-------yup already have that under control, the bullet is 0.446 patches to 0.4495 after drying

i make my own sizing dies so i can fit the slug with any common paper------perhaps i'll come up with the best combination for this Shiloh.
