RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Hiwall55 - 09-26-2021

Ian ,I had this CPA built about 4 or 5 years ago, sold my 38-50 Browning to Arnie and he got the whole thing rolling. Its a Green Mountain barrel that's probably from when they cut the rifleing, not button rifled them.
Miss all you on Facebook, Bill Rummenie.

I wondered where you went. Have not heard from you in a while. When we get our 38s fired up Deana and I will have to go shoot there with you. Marc and Dutch tell me that Effingham is the promise land for 38s

Pardon my ignorance,
Where is Effingham?

They have silhouette shoots there. A couple of guys who I shoot with usually take their 38s when they go there. I have never been but would like to go sometime.

I got out Friday Sept 24 on nice fall day to empty some brass in my 38-50.
Still the 371360E bullet .
First group after sighting in a different scope, center diamond. Shot the 5:30 hole, then adjusted elevation and shot the 5 shots.
Then Shot the next 6 with a half grain less powder at the upper left diamond.
Not bad group of 2"x2" except for the 4:00 out of the group.
Still happy with this rifle.

Arnie,
That is pretty respectable for 200 yds.
Your cramming more powder in that skinny case then I put in my .40-65. Big Grin
But I seat my PP a little deeper then you do.
Man the clock sure slowed down waiting for my Hepburn.

Ian,
I been there and it's a fine range but they shoot under baffles and sitting on a stool and couple critters are hard to get under the baffle.
I guess they might have had a shot get away once maybe.

Kurt,
I first tried some (older) Swiss 3F, since that seemed to be the stuff to use. I think Rick Moritz is using this in his 38-50. YOu will recall that I was inquiring/begging around for more Swiss 3f. I got a couple pounds from Jim Kluskins.
Shot well at 66 grains. Fills the case just short of the case mouth So as to just get a 0.060 LDPE wad started a bit below the case mouth.

The "usual" recent Swiss 1.5, loaded to the same volume my load was 63 grains.
It shot well.
Then, I lucked on to 17 pounds of an OLD lot of Swiss 1.5. It is actually slightly more dense than the 3F. Hence I can get 67 grains of this to the same volume in the case.
I compress down to about 0.100" from case mouth. This gives a perfect fit for the
length of the base band/major diameter of both the 371345E and the 371360E
Compression should be about the 0.100". 66 grains will give something like 0.050-0.070"
It is noted that I can get 78 grains of this same lot of Swiss 1.5 in my 40-65.
My more recent "typical" lot of 1.5, my load is 74.5gr.

I have checked the latest loads across my Oehler 33 Chronograph:
66 grains Swiss 1.5Denselot:
with the 371345E 1.4" Velocity: 1387fps, S.D:3.4fps E.S: 8.0
371360E 1.46" Velocity; 1356fps, S.D. 8.3fps, E.S: 21.4fps.
with 67 grains: 371360E Velocity: 1361fps, S.D. 5.4fps,E.S: 12.3fps

Arnie,
The way this black powder situation is going with the manufactures shutting down I think they might be forcing us to go with the 209 or or other subs. I don't think I have any 3f Swiss anymore but I have enough 3F OE I use in the flintlock and the Hawkens maybe I better save it for the .30-50.

The most 1.5 Swiss lot# 05-11-18 is 69.5 grs. This chamber is a PP only and a .400" patched is a snug fit in a fired case from this chamber. A case fired in my Browning will only go in this chamber a little over 1/2 way. I almost sent this reamer to DZ to chamber the rifle with it, but I wanted a .38-50.
My safe is pretty much covered from the .40's, 44's .45's and the .50 but no .38's yet Big Grin
Man those are some impressive velocities that little .38 produces. That should make it a fine flat shooting midrange caliber.
