RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Don McDowell - 05-30-2022 She's going to have to learn proper use of a blow tube, or wipe between shots shooting greasers. Not sure she'll gain anything, going to a greaser, but it's worth a try to keep her in the game. RE: .38-50 Hepburn - ian45662 - 05-30-2022 She will be able to possibly wipe with one wet patch or even blow tube. We will start with blow tubing and just see how things go. That would make things much more simple for her RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Don McDowell - 05-30-2022 It maybe simpler but in the rattlebattle pace of a silhouette match it’s hard for a new shooter to keep track of all the nuances of any type of fouling control RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Don McDowell - 05-30-2022 Another thing to keep in mind reduced band bullets carry less lube, and less lube means more attention to fouling control RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Hiwall55 - 05-30-2022 Checked my GG-38 caliber molds 5 of them,2-330 grain lyman and mos,3 BACO, 360 gr. Ellitical, reduced bands money,360 grain, no band reduced money. Nose are all .366 to .367. Sorry these won't work, but you can borrow one that strikes your fancy. RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Kurt - 05-31-2022 Well I finally got to extend the range for the .38-50 Hep. I had a great weekend shooting with Arnie at a .22 match at Wisconsin Rapids Saturday and a BPCR Gong Match at Merrill Wis. that had a 500 yard range. Arnie wooped me at both matches he is a hard holder. TNX for putting up with me Arnie I really enjoyed shooting with you.At Merrill I was hoping to get some time with practice before the match to shoot some Ladder loads I took incase there was time, but it didn't work out. We started on the 200 yd line and that was good because I had a close sight setting at that distance and from the moves up to the 300, 400 and 500 yd plates it took a consistent full turn on the elevation using the DZ scope except between the 400 and 500 plate I needed to add 1.5 MOA on the elevation. I was very happy with this caliber and the way the rifle shot but I can see that at the 500 I need to spend a little more time with the loads because I missed the big Ram twice and hit a small triangle both times that is just a small fraction of the ram. The conditions on the ground were what I would call very good but the winds were slapping the treetops around pretty hard and I found out when I got on the road going home I fought a 30 mph head wind for 300 plus miles that pushed pretty hard on the Gypsy wagon. The range is protected by fairly high maples and the range is narrow that helped keeping the ground winds down. I think when I fire the cases another time or two and check the case wall diameters to get a consistent release of the bullet it will stay on target well at 500 yds. Some of the bullets were loose in the loaded round and some were tight so I feel that had some effect on the vertical that missed and some head space between the ears had something to do with the miss. I shot prone for the .22 Palma match Sat and that was a big mistake. I couldn't get up off the Matt, I had to go hand over hand on my scope stand to get on my feet. I shot the Gong match sitting and my timing was a little off with the cross hairs moving over the irons. The loads I took were loaded with 63 gr of 2F OE and it was not as good here at home than the 64 gr load of 1.5 Swiss but I did not have enough Swiss left for more than maybe 20 or 25 rounds. It was a good time. I think this little caliber will be a good Midrange shooter when all comes together. Kurt RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Kurt - 05-31-2022 Ian, If she is not comfortable wiping let he use the blow tube till she shoots and gets aquatinted with the rifle. A BT will work fine but it will take up a few grains of powder. I would use a vellum translucent tracing paper that will except the moisture better than the paper we normally use. It does not shred the inner wrap as well as woodbine/cotton gut it won't wrinkle the bullet when seating the shell. The important thing is, Your Wife and rifle need to form a partnership, and that is time behind the buttplate with you two at the range and it won't take long and she will start doing different things with the wiping and using the blow tube. RE: .38-50 Hepburn - JKR - 05-31-2022 Kurt, I was happy to get to meet you at Merrill. I wish I could’ve made the match at Rapids but I had to be home on Sunday so I picked Merrill. It was good to see Arnie and the Merrill gang again. I enjoy shooting there. I never had much more than one minute of wind on my sight. I thought conditions were pretty easy. Like you, it wasn’t until I got on the road that I realized just how hard it was blowing. It would’ve been an interesting day at Lodi! Jim RE: .38-50 Hepburn - Kurt - 05-31-2022 Jim, I wish I could have spent more time with you but I had to get on the road and my back was really letting me know I had one ![]() The attendance was low but there are a fine bunch to shoot with. I hope that I will see a score sheet for both matches how we did. I will try to make the forth of July shoot at Merrill. I just ordered a Creedmoor from baco but it looks like it will be about 8 weeks before it will be done. I might be interested in trying that elliptical with the reduced bands. |
