I can see where you are coming from Don. Paul used to mix some powdered graphite in to his melted parafin and let the excess drain as it cooled. He never said but I bet it sure worked thru the lever action pretty slick. bobw

I've been using Matthews' recipe (50/50 beeswax/Vaseline) from day one for the smokeless loads. Easy, durable and not the least messy. Fired a few rounds to check zero a few years back prior to a deer hunt and they did OK. At the time they had been loaded for 9 years. The .45-70 loads used the same lube.

Nothing wrong with Vaseline in bullet lube it has been used longer then I been around.
I use it in my lube and I like the kind that has coconut oil in it.
It smells soooo good

Matthews probably read about that recipe in something Ned Roberts wrote, that recipe has been around a long long time. Japanwax and vaseline was pretty popular mix back in the day as well. I just didn't like that much grease on the patch, and it didn't shoot as well as the no greased patches.

I've heard that a lot, never went down such a path. Might. Someday. Dunno how comfy I am with the idea to tell the truth. At the suggestion of a BP patch abuser out in Missoula a few years back I used dry patches to polish a grey bore in an old Belgian cape gun. Worked awfully fast. 6 rounds and it shone like a mirror. Let's say I'm tempted, but feeling very cautious.
Ned's book...every time I pick it up I relearn something new. LOTS of info there for the careful reader.
