RE: .38-50 #2 - beltfed - 11-26-2024 Jim, I have samples available for that 16 twist 40-82 Crossno with a 0.325" long base band that could be seated deeply, depending on your amount of freebore in front of chamber. FIrst is my "original" first DDEPP bullet, now the BACO Jim 403380E, a 1.325" long, 370 gr bullet that has proven to shoot out to 1000yds in my 40-65 16 twist. Second bullet, I have samples from Steve U of my next generation DDEPP , 1.325" long with shorter ogive to improve stability at long range in twitchy head winds. This also has 0.325" long base band. I could bring some of the 403380E to Merrill. Arnie RE: .38-50 #2 - JKR - 11-28-2024 Arnie, It would be interesting to try your bullet. Currently I’m quite happy with the Saeco 740. It seats deep in the case putting the powder charge at 64 grains. Accuracy looks good at 500 yards. I haven’t tried anything farther. I have no real purpose for this rifle other than the fact that I really like the rifle itself. It’s my only roller and I appreciate the simplicity and simple elegance. The 40-82 cartridge is starting to grow on me a little but for my use I would prefer a 40-65. Looking forward to Merrill! Jim RE: .38-50 #2 - beltfed - 11-30-2024 Jim, YOu could always have the barrel set back=probably only 0.3" or so and rechambered for the 40-65. just need to choose the right reamer with a cylindrical tight neck. OR, find a Browning 40-65 Me, too. to Merrill Arnie RE: .38-50 #2 - beltfed - 11-30-2024 Oh, Jim, FWIW My load in the 40-65 is 74 grains of Swiss 1.5 of recent date over the 403371 bullet seated in the case around 0.125 CLocks close on to 1400fps So, with a deep seated bullet, your current 40-82 should be similar Arnie |
