RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - beltfed - 02-03-2022 JIm, That 77/22 Hornet is a shootin fool !! Wow, good job accurizing it. Arnie RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Gussy - 02-04-2022 Jim, excellent shooter! Mine is as I received it. I did put a lighter trigger spring in and I'm still considering an aftermarket trigger. I'm still working on loads. So far, both rifles seem to like the same thing, or close enough for squirrels! If we get rid of the snow I'll move the bench to the 100 yd lane and see what they have to say. RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Kurt - 02-04-2022 Jim, Is that rifle .223 or a .224 barreled? I know my Savage was a .223 I have to dig around and see if I still have some .223 bullets, if I do I will give them to you. RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Gussy - 02-04-2022 The Browning is . 223, Ruger is . 224. I have about 800 .223, 45gr bullets. The Browning shoots . 224s just fine. I usually reduce the load a few grains when starting a new load. I've never seen any sign of pressure. The last target was shot loaded .1 under max load in the new Lyman book. Primers were still rounded and not even remotely flattened. (The new Lee neck sizing die had a load sheet that had a starting load .2 grain under the Lyman max!! Lee max was over a full grain more than Lyman.) RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Kurt - 02-04-2022 I will dig in the box and see if I still have them. I think they were Speer. RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Distant Thunder - 02-04-2022 I have shot both .223 and .224 bullets in my Ruger and the .223 shoot fine, but it is a .224 barrel and that is what I have used mostly. It seems almost any bullet between 35 grains and 50 grains will shoot well with very little load development in my Ruger the way it is now. The weakest part of the Hornet is the case and they are very pressure sensitive, as long as maximum loads are worked up to carefully it's not a problem. That's one of the reasons LIL'GUN is such a great powder in the Hornet, I don't think you can load enough to get in trouble with pressure. The cases are very thin and care must be used in loading or you can easily crush a case. The Lee collet neck sizing die works very well and was one of the things that helped improve the accuracy of my rifle. I did have to polish the mandril to get the necks to size to what worked best for my rifle. It's been a few years since I did any shooting with my Ruger. I was going to get everything out today and see just what I have bullet wise but I just didn't have time. I'm working too much and shooting too little and I don't see that changing until after June this year. RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Don McDowell - 02-04-2022 Speaking of later in the year any word on Lodi? RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - beltfed - 02-05-2022 Don, I posted the Lodi Dates just now under Competitions Arnie RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Gussy - 02-05-2022 Got off a few today. Used the same powder, H110, since that's all I have. Used 10.5 grn in all. The 30grn Barnes shot very good, well below .40 The 35grn V Max about .70 The 40grn Nosler, over an inch. Not good at all. After we return to reality and I can get powder, I will get some Lil' gun. RE: Slightly off black powder, 22 hornet brass - Gussy - 02-28-2022 Jim K, midway has "factory seconds" for just under $14\100. Doesn't say who makes them but after some digging, looks like Hornady made for Remington. Look just like the V Max. |
