On all the way around. RE: This is what kepted me waiting .... - Kurt - 07-29-2012 Second round forming brass. This time I used some 1.3" long bullets with the same powder load and all Win LRP and held a 6 O-clock hold for a better sight picture and the 20 rounds fired stayed inside 2-1/4" except one Henry took. I hope that this is a sign on how this rifle will settle in. Kurt RE: This is what kepted me waiting .... - Creeker - 08-04-2012 Geez Kurt, none of my rifles look like that. ![]() RE: This is what kepted me waiting .... - bobw - 08-04-2012 Been meaning to mention it Kurt, but I feel real bad about you having to lay around being a bum in the Bighorns for 3 weeks. Geez some guys get all the breaks. bobw RE: This is what kepted me waiting .... - Kurt - 08-05-2012 Bob. It was a real pleasure spending the time up there. Carolyn and I really enjoyed the time 4 wheeling. We put a little over 700 miles on the Polaris and seen many awesome sights and critters. We go there every year after the Q. A good place to get lost in for a few weeks. Kurt RE: This is what kepted me waiting .... - Kurt - 08-15-2012 I been working getting brass to fit the heavy barreled original 44-100 Remington chamber and it had been a drag the way I been doing it but it's the only way I can do this. I made a die using the reamer I used for the chamber but the brass has a lot of spring back even when annealing the whole case to stop some of the spring back. I talked to C&H to see if they can make a sizing die for me and they said I have one in stock I had them send it and it turned out being a die that is like my .44-90 BN so I fired it back and I asked if I send you the chamber print and a few cases that have been fired in the chamber 4 times and they are still sticking a little but they can use them for a pattern but .002 smaller in dimensions. There answer was yes but it will take a year or more before I can deliver. Groannnn! I think I will lap the chamber with a case that is still tight but this will be the last option. I will design a second reamer and make a sizing die using it. The die I made using the chamber reamer will make a good in line seating die should I want to use a GG bullet so that effort was not wasted making it. So far I have 200 rounds shot one time but beating then the final 1/4" in the chamber and using a cleaning rod driving the sticking brass out is a drag. I have 15 cases I shot 4 times and I can seat those with my thumb but they still stick when extracting them. This rifle with the cases that almost fit is showing that this will be a good shooting rifle. All of my case forming has been done at 130 yards except today I went to the 200 yard pit. At 130 yards I shot 7 rounds using the brass that has been shot 4 times and it shot a round group that shot a 3/4" out side to out side take off the bullet diameter makes it about 1/2" C/C and a second 7 shot group using a different bullet shot a 1 1/2 vertical group. What really surprised me was; I was using 30 year old CC 250 LR primers I wanted to use up and 2F of the old KIK powder that gave me fits in the .44-90 BN. Today that load at 200 yards using a 506 grain .432 diameter PP elliptical KAL bullet with 85.5 grains of the old 2FG KIK powder cases 5 times fired shot a 6 shot group 1 3/4" high 3/4" wide. Man If I dont wear this barrel out driving cases in and out it shows signs that it will shoot. Kurt RE: This is what kepted me waiting .... - Don McDowell - 08-15-2012 Kurt could you take the temper out of a lee 40-65 die and then run your reamer into it? Have you thought about checking with Hornady's custom die services? RE: This is what kepted me waiting .... - Kurt - 08-15-2012 Don. I have run the case through a base swage die I made to reduce the base to .499" from .502" And I also ran the case through a .40-65 die all the way and increased the neck to except the .438 bullet and that worked but I also split one case neck doing this. I might make up a lead slug or use a case and lap the chamber a little if I have to. In the morning I will call Wilson and see if they will make me a die. But I think 1 or 2 more shots they will work ok. Kurt |
