RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Don McDowell - 05-25-2020 What's the length of that bullet? I like the nose design. RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - J.B. - 05-26-2020 Well I won't now until I try I guess but its certainly a sharper and more pointed ogive/ meplat than I had expected. The mould specified at between 1.4 & 1.42 and after a casting session of about 40 projectiles.. they are all coming out at 1.405" and in 16/1 at 493.5 grns. I planned this for the 17/1 twist rifle in the States...along with the last gg bullet I had made up. Looks like I'll have plenty of time to sweat on whether it was a good idea or not. Here is a photo of a few to get an idea. I've still to learn how to 'origami' the fold over a flat base but I guess I'll get there. Jim..to answer your question about paper.. I have a few to choose from now but tend to favour Seth Cole yellow in preference to others. Believe its a 7lb paper. J.B. RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Don McDowell - 05-26-2020 Looks like that bugger ought to shoot well in the 17 twist barrel. I'ld wet wrap a 7 lb patch ( your sc 55y) 7/8 inch wide, with just enough to fold over the base that it doesn't cover the sprew cut. Keep the front edge square, the fold over the base will take care of it's self. RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Distant Thunder - 05-26-2020 That looks pretty good for a long range bullet, but that somewhat depends on what you wanted. I would wrap them to come up to the correct diameter on the front part and load 'em and shoot 'em. You can size the base after patching very easily if it's not too big. RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Kurt - 05-26-2020 Gavin, That bullet will put a smile on your face with that 1/17 ROT. Make some 2 or 3 shot ladder loads and you will not see the group opening very much start to finish. Hold the barrel on the sticks at the same spot. If it won't bring it over with you on your neck trip and I will buy it from you. I would like to give that DD PP a whirl in my 1/17 ROT standard Shiloh Farmer rifle. Below, the 4 bullets the left is the best in my .44's 1/16, 1/17 and the 1/19. [attachment=1733] RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - beltfed - 05-26-2020 J.B. That is a very nice looking bullet. looks like it should shoot well, and stabile out to long range at 1.4" long and with your 17 twist. Jim, Matt Steckel got the 44 mold from BACO. Will be interesting to see that one in his friend's 44-100/18 twist Hepburn. I may get to see it this weekend at Rapids. Matt is coming up Assuming the Mini Palma match is still on. beltfed/arnie RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Distant Thunder - 05-27-2020 Arnie, Matt is going to send me a few of those when he gets some cast. I will test them in my .44-77 when I have some time, but I don't even have the rifle yet so it will be awhile before I shoot his bullets. It should give me a good idea what BACO can do with a 2-D PPB in .44 caliber. I'm sure that is where I am ultimately headed. I'll be watching Gavin and Matt with theirs. It all takes time. RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Caprock - 05-27-2020 (05-27-2020, 09:22 AM)Distant Thunder Wrote: Arnie, How long is the DD shank on the bullet pictured above? RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Distant Thunder - 05-27-2020 Arnie designed that bullet for Matt's chamber and the dimensions would have to be adjusted for any other chamber. This is the drawing from Arnie, he has these 2-D PPB figured out pretty well and I like his designs. This has been posted before so I know Arnie won't mind if I pass it along again. [attachment=1734] RE: .44-77 PP bullets. - Distant Thunder - 05-27-2020 To give you an idea of the adjustments needed for a different chamber and rifle, this time with a 17-twist, this is the bullet Arnie designed for my pending (I don't have the rifle yet!) Shiloh .44-77 with a Krieger barrel. [attachment=1735] Once I have the rifle I will check the bore diameter, the freebore length and ID of fire formed cases and making any adjustments needed THEN I'll have BACO make a mold to the finalized drawing. Fit is very important to long range accuracy and I'll need to get the dimension on the money for best results. |
