RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Distant Thunder - 08-14-2019 Kurt, Yes, please bring those .44-77 with you. I may have some brass to compare so it would be interesting. RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Kurt - 08-14-2019 Fill a couple cases with powder and I will bring some bullets and shoot them in my rifle if you want to. I'm sure that Kirk hasn't changer the reamer since I got my rifle. Not that many are getting .44-77's to wear a carbine reamer out. RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Distant Thunder - 08-14-2019 I'll see if I can do that. That would tell me a lot about the standard chamber. And I do have questions! RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Kurt - 08-14-2019 Fine I will pack the rifle tonight. I'm leaving around 0800 hrs in the morning and find a camp ground close to the range. I won't be able to get on the range till mid morning on Friday. It's 6-7 hrs from my place and that is to far to leave Friday morning and get a sight setting for my new rifle I want to use. If any thing else let me know before bed time. RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - beltfed - 08-14-2019 Sure wish I could join you guys at Harris this weekend. beltfed/arnie RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Kurt - 08-14-2019 Arnie just come!! your 4 1/2 hrs closer then me
RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Distant Thunder - 08-14-2019 How far up the neck should I fill with powder plus wad? What diameter bullet? I've got two sets of brass in the works, not sure which ones will work out best, but that will be resolved in time. If everything works out tomorrow I'll try to bring a few of each and we'll see how each looks after firing. ![]() This will give me some fireformed brass to ponder! I can drool all over them! I'd hate to drool on someone else's brass!
RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Kurt - 08-14-2019 Jim I put 50 bullets of all types I use packed up so you can pull the trigger before you get the moulds cut and if you don't have .44 wads I can bring them also. Just stick the powder in about a 1/4" from the mouth. If you don't have wads just stick some cotton in so the powder stays in and we will do the rest at the range. This is just for pushing the shoulders out and expand the case to fit the chamber. I don't have a hand press or I would throw the dies in incase we need to set the shoulder back to fit the chamber if needed. Just make sure the cases are annealed at least a 1/2" below the neck so the spring back is at a minimum. Forgot......I patch my bullets to .438-.4385" for hunting .436" RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Distant Thunder - 08-14-2019 Kurt, I have a lot of .44 caliber stuff left over from my .44-100 ST, wads, molds (Somewhere around here!) a compression die and other miscellaneous stuff. Don't have the 100 anymore and I put the molds someplace for safe keeping! That's probably the last I'll see of them. Two are Brooks GG molds and an unknow number are PP molds I made. One worked pretty well in the 100. I used it to win my first gong match shooting paper patch at Merrill. It was kind of a big deal at the time and we had some good laughs over it. ![]() I have a hand press that I'll be bringing for other reasons so we can use that. The necks on these brass are right now sized for a .436" bullet. That is why I asked about bullet diameter. I can expand them for .446" bullet if that work better. I'll just pack everything I think we might use, we'll get something to work. RE: .44-77 and paper patch? - Kurt - 08-14-2019 Ok that fine. I have the dies and shell holder plus some wads packed. Just a slight flair at the mouth so a .438 will start is good enough. This is not an accuracy test run all we need id to get the bullet in the case and pull the trigger. Thats your job ![]() By the way, this rifle has a narrow crescent buttplate so if your pain shy bring some padding
