RE: Wind ?
Yup Steve. Put a turkey feather on a small 1/2" post and get out and shoot and pay attention to what is going on with the feather and the holes on the target.

RE: Wind ?
Pretty much what Kurt says, just get out and do a lot of shooting and pay attention to what your wind calls are compared to where the bullets strike.
A high quality spotting scope is a must. You should be able to clearly see the mirage if you back the focus off just a tad.

RE: Wind ?
Steve the wind closer matter the most, and at the target, not really at all. There are so many variations fom range to range that there is a good deal of "home field advantage". We have lots of hills here that cause strange wind patterns, so maybe it matters less where you are. From what I've learned so far, you can often find one or two flags to base most of your windage corrections on. Or if the wind isn't doing much, pay lots of attention to the mirage.

RE: Wind ?
Put a hearing aid in each ear and they'll tell you how fast the wind is blowing and from direction thereof!!

RE: Wind ?
Thats funny that you say that Rick. I often use the sound in each ear and turn my head until it feels the same in each ear. Does it get better with hearing aids? Something to look forward to as I get older :-)

Chris.

With hearing aids your not able to distinguish where the sound is coming from usually and the sounds just don't match your hearing when it was top notch.
Believe me Smile It cost me $6000. + to get mine so I can hear some sounds and speech. I still cant understand my little cookie munchers or a women over the phone and the only birds I hear are crows.

Steve,

That has been debated ever since the chinese started shooting firecrackers. Something to think about; to start out how do you know what the wind value is at the target? At the line you can make an educated guess and probably get into the game.

My mentor was a 'mirage' guy, so that is what I use mainly. I look for either the same condition to shoot in or make an educated guess based on where the bullets have been hitting the target and how the current conditions have changed. Sometimes you must crank the knobs.

The in between distance is about 2/3 of the way to the target [long range] where that bullets gets fairly high in the air, so you may have to keep an I on what is going on up there also.

Do not be afraid to crank the knobs, you will learn a lot doing it.

All of this is what makes BP shooting fun.

Keep on hav'n fun!

RE: Wind ?
Mike, I think not being afraid to crank the knobs is a big help. And knowing exactly how much windage is on the sight at any time. Lots of people seem to just add or subtract without knowing where they really are.

RE: Wind ?
If you're shooting 1000 yards....the wind midway at 500 yds. is the most important!!
