The more I read about ppb the more I want to try some out. My dilemma is that I am not sure what would work best in my gun. What I have is a Remington original in 45 2.1 (actually 2.2) with a 1 in 22 rot. I can shoot 1.4" ggb with decent hunting accuracy to 200 yards. This gun has a good bore and groove diameter is .458 with a .450 bore. Given the age of the rifle it is more then likely chambered for ppb. Can any of you recommend a good over the counter bullet for me to try in the 1.2 to 1.35 length? I am looking to patch to bore diameter with tracing paper. Thanks in advance.

About the only commercial slicks that I know of are the ones Buffalo Arms sells.
But surely there'll be someone along after a bit that'ld have some they could send you to test drive.

if it is old it could be more likely to have been chambered for greasers, as would be a 50/70.
most othere would be for pp.

Powderburner my cases all come out fireformed at.460 inside neck diameter.

Greaser chamber, all of them 45-70 and 50-70's they made them all that way to shoot Gov't greaser ammo. No real problem other than not having the benefits of an original style tight ppb chamber. Try sizing one full length with your dies, when I do this with my RCBS 45-70 set I get an outside the mouth dia. of .469-.470" depending on the brand an spring back of the brass. That translates into .448-.449" inside dia. , of course depending on your case wall thickness. Screw your die out enuf until it gives you the inside dia you want to hold your ppb. Yeah you will work the hell outta your brass just like all them guys a shooting greasers, but it will work. I been playing with my trapdoor and .442" with 9 lb onion skin at 420 grs with 75 grs of Fg to duplicate the original Sharps 45-2.1" load. Shoots good and sure ain't a whiner load like most greaser shooters use. ??? You gotta ask, the help is here. bobw

Or you could shoot Groove dia PP bullets and not worry about resizing them.

Good to know. I was under the impression that the Gov loads were pp 405's learn something new everyday. I dont have a full leangth die but will see what I can do with my neck sizer. I dont really use it as I have been loading my brass unsized with just a hint of a tapper crimp to keep the bullet from sliding out so I will size a couple and see what I get. What mold are you using for that 420gr? Thanks for the great info.

Semtav was wanting to try bore diameter for hunting so I could use soft lead and get follow up if needed. Think I would have issues with a fouled bore and groove diameter but I could be wrong. Guess I will have to try both and see :-)

You WILL have trouble hunting with a fouled bore and groove diameter. Count on it. Shoot straight, rdnck.
