I had the great pleasure of attending the annual 1000 yard match at Harris Minnesota this past weekend.
I won’t go on and on about how windy it was. After all, have any of you ever shot a long range match in dead wind conditions? I know I haven’t.
Suffice it to say that on Saturday it was just about unreadable and Sunday wasn’t much different. All of us suffered elevation shots that left us scratching our heads.
I think everyone dug themselves pretty deep holes on Saturday. Mine being somewhat deeper than usual. Raymond Hansen managed to keep his not so deep as the rest of us.
On Sunday I managed to claw my way up for a comeback but not enough to catch up to Ray who finished on top. One of the visiting Norwegian international shooters finished in third place and I managed to finish second. We were all shooting paper patched bullets. Raymond and the shooter from Norway shot muzzle loading rifles and I shot a 74 Sharps.
The greatest thing about these matches is the new people you meet and the friends you make. I had the great pleasure to have Ed Decker for my shooting partner. I was fascinated by his stories of his life in the mountains of East Tennessee and his experiences on the international muzzle loading team.
My thanks to all the Minnesotans who work hard putting on this match. I’m looking forward to shooting their next long range match on August 20&21.
